Golf Simulators for Beginners: What You Really Need to Know
Not a golfer yet? Not sure what all the tech means? That's fine — most of our customers felt the same way before they got in touch. Here's the honest version.
What is a golf simulator, actually?
A golf simulator is a setup that lets you hit real golf balls — with real clubs — into a screen that shows you a virtual golf course. You see your shot fly, land and roll in front of you. The system measures your swing and tells you exactly how far the ball travelled, what direction it went and why.
That's it. No special balls, no special clubs, no complicated setup routine every time you play. You walk in, select a course, take a few practice swings to warm up, and start playing.
The screen is a proper impact-rated surface — not a bedsheet, not a net (well, not just a net). The projector fills it with a live course view. And the launch monitor — the piece of tech that tracks your ball — handles all the maths invisibly in the background.
You don't need to understand how it works to enjoy it. That said, if you want the technical side, JP has written a detailed guide over on Golf Simulators.
Two things to check before anything else
Before we talk about which setup is right for you, there are two things worth checking — because we'd rather tell you now than after you've got excited:
1. Space. You need a minimum of roughly 2.8m ceiling height, 3m width and 5m length to swing freely. Most spare rooms, garages and garden rooms can be made to work — but it's worth measuring before you go any further. See How Much Space Do You Need? for the full guide.
2. Budget. A solid home simulator starts at around €2,615 for a basic starter setup, or €8,995 for our Sim-in-a-Box bundle, which includes everything you need in one package. Fully bespoke builds run from €10,000 to €20,000. These aren't small numbers — but for year-round practice, entertainment and genuine family use, most of our customers tell us it was the best thing they bought for the house.
If either of those gives you pause, the €50 consultation is exactly the right next step — it's an hour with JP and Ellen at our Dublin demo centre, and the €50 comes off your order price if you go ahead.
How easy is it to use?
Very.
We hear this a lot after the first session: *"I thought it would be complicated."* It isn't. Modern simulator software is designed to be intuitive — if you can use a TV remote, you can navigate a course selection screen.
Here's what a typical first session looks like:
1. Turn on the system (one switch) 2. Open the software on the screen (takes about 30 seconds) 3. Pick a course — there are hundreds, from Pebble Beach to Portmarnock 4. Select the number of players and whether you want a real round or a practice range 5. Tee it up and go
The launch monitor handles everything automatically. No calibration, no button-pressing between shots. It picks up your club, reads the ball, and shows your shot on screen within a second of impact.
Beginner-friendly tip: the driving range mode is brilliant for anyone who's never played golf or is just starting out. You can hit as many shots as you like with no score, no pressure, and instant feedback on every one.
What families actually use it for
Golf is the main event — but a home simulator gets used for more than just golf, especially in families where not everyone is a dedicated golfer.
Most simulator software includes skills challenges — closest to the pin, longest drive competitions, beat-the-clock games — that work brilliantly even if you've never played a real round. Kids particularly love these; there's no rules overhead, just hit the ball and see what happens.
Multi-sport packages are available on some platforms too — adding games like dodgeball or target challenges that use the same screen and sensor setup. Not the main reason to buy a simulator, but it adds to the value.
For serious golfers in the household, swing analysis mode is where the simulator earns its keep. You can watch your club path, face angle, attack angle and ball speed in real time — data that most amateur golfers never have access to without expensive lessons. It's like having a TrackMan in your house.

Your next step
You don't need to know exactly what you want before you call us. That's what the conversation is for.
Most of our customers start by telling us their room dimensions and a rough budget. From there, we can point you to the right setup — whether that's one of our ready-to-go bundles or a fully custom build designed around your space.
If you'd rather see it in person first — which we'd always recommend, especially if you've never tried a simulator — book a €50 consultation at our Dublin demo centre. You'll try the equipment, ask every question you have, and leave with a clear picture of what's right for you. The €50 is redeemable against your order, so it's effectively free advice.
We're open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Call us on 01 582 6935 or get in touch through the contact page.
